Virtual Colonoscopy Preparation

Purchase a Fleet Prep Kit from your local pharmacy. You may choose from the following:

  • Fleet Prep Kit 1 (suppository)
  • Fleet Prep Kit 2 (bag enema)
  • Fleet Prep Kit 3 (enema)

The cost is typically in the $7 - $8 price range. Please follow the 48-hour prep instructions (as shown below).

2 DAYS BEFORE EXAM

8am: Eat a LOW RESIDUE MEAL.
12 noon: Eat a LOW RESIDUE MEAL.
6pm: Dinner - all clear liquids. Drink at least 8 ounces of Clear Liquids

1 DAY BEFORE EXAM

8 am: Breakfast - all clear liquids
9 am: Drink at least 8 ounces clear liquids
10 am: Drink at least 8 ounces clear liquids
11 am: Drink at least 8 ounces clear liquids
12 noon: Lunch - all clear liquids
2 pm: Take Fleet Phospho-soda Solution. Follow immediately with at least 8 ounces clear liquids.
3 pm: Drink at least 8 ounces clear liquids
4 pm: Drink at least 8 ounces clear liquids
5 pm: Drink at least 8 ounces clear liquids
6 pm: Dinner - all clear liquids
7 pm: Take 4 Fleet Bisacodyl Tablets

DAY OF EXAM

Do Not Eat Breakfast or Lunch (small sips of water only)

One hour before leaving for your appointment:
Follow the instructions in the Fleet Prep Kit to administer ONE of the following:

  • the Fleet Bisacodyl Suppository (in Fleet Prep Kit 1)
  • the Fleet Bag enema (in Fleet Prep Kit 2)
  • the Fleet Bisacodyl Enema (in Fleet Prep Kit 3)

LOW RESIDUE DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS

Light Diet Plan -- preferably small portion meals

BREADS:

ALLOWED:  White refined breads, rolls, biscuits, muffins, crackers, pancakes, and waffles.

AVOID:  Whole grain flour products of any type and baked goods made with bran, nuts, seeds, coconut, fruits, bagels, cornbread, or graham crackers.

CEREALS:

ALLOWED:  Refined cooked cereals, including cream of wheat, and farina, puffed wheat, puffed rice, and rice krispies.

AVOID:  Oatmeal, any whole grained cereal bran or granola, and any containing nuts, seeds, coconut, or dried fruit.

DESSERTS:

ALLOWED:  Plain cakes and cookies, water ices (Marino's), plain low or non-fat yogurt, Jell-O, custard, grape or apple jelly, plain hard candy, marshmallows, and light ice cream/frozen yogurt without nuts, chocolate or coffee.

AVOID:  Any desserts made with whole grain, flour , bran, seeds, coconut, dried fruit, yogurts with fruits skins, seeds or nuts, sherberts and popcorn.  No chocolate.

FRUITS:

ALLOWED:  Most canned or cooked fruits, applesauce and ripe banana.

AVOID:  Dried fruits, all berries, most raw fruit, except banana.

POTATO AND POTATO SUBSTITUTE:

ALLOWED:  Cooked white potato without the skin, white rice, white pasta and egg noodles.

AVOID:  All others, including whole-wheat pasta, noodles, vegetable pastas, and sweet potato.

VEGETABLES:

ALLOWED:  Cooked fresh, frozen, or canned carrots, beets, asparagus tips, French style string beans, and pureed squash, spinach.

AVOID:  All others including raw and deep-fried vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower cabbage, spinach, sauerkraut, winter peas, corn , lettuce, tomatoes and any other vegetables with seeds.

FATS:

ALLOWED: Margarine, salad oil, light salad dressings, light mayonnaise, and plain gravy.

AVOID:  Butter, any fat containing whole grain flour, bran, seeds, nuts, coconut, or dried fruit.

MEATS AND MEAT SUBSTITUTES:

ALLOWED:  Ground and well-cooked white meat, skinless chicken and skinless turkey, fish shellfish, eggs, and low-fat cheese.

AVOID:  Red meat, BBQ, or pickled meat, any made with whole grain ingredients, seeds, or nuts, dried beans, peas, lentils, legumes, peanut butter and whole milk cheese.

SOUPS:

ALLOWED:  Bouillon, broth, low-fat cream made with allowed vegetables, noodles, rice, or refined white flour.

AVOID:  All others.

BEVERAGES:

ALLOWED:  Decaffeinated liquids of all kinds, Caffeinated beverages limited to 2-3 (10 oz.) cups per day, low or non-fat milk, and strained fruit juices.

AVOID:  Espresso, frappuccino, cappuccino, whole milk, fruit/vegetable juices containing pulp, prune juice, and all alcoholic beverages.

MISCELLANEOUS:

ALLOWED:  Medication with small amounts of water.

AVOID:  Vitamin pills on day of exam and day prior to exam.

 

 

CLEAR LIQUIDS
  • strained fruit juices without pulp (apple, white grape, lemonade)
  • water
  • clear broth or bouillon
  • coffee or tea (without milk or nondairy creamer)
  • Any of the following that are not colored red or purple
      • Gatorade
      • Carbonated and noncarbonated soft drinks
      • Kool-Aid (or other fruit-flavored drinks)
      • Plain Jello (without added fruits or toppings)
      • Ice popsicles
